Up-Scale Design

For the past several seasons, the words tiny and small have been the best options for describing designs and fabric. But introductions at the High Point furniture market indicated that this is all about to change. In a striking reversal, the newest size was large, bold and more motif-focused than pattern based. Moreover, all design categories seemed equally interested in exploring the potential of a countertrend in scale. Even though produce-sack fabrics had less exposure, vintage accessories Continue reading...

Tribal Overtones in High Point

HickoryChairAndrewMartin

At Maison & Objet in Paris this January, I saw a fabric collection that I loved at Andrew Martin. The look was tribal, yet also whimsical. Icons included naively formed animals, birds and people, abstracted geometrics and American and British flags. They coordinated with thin stripes in ticking personalities (also on-trend), animal skins and worn-look plains. Those fabrics were everywhere from the high end to medium-high price points this week at the High Point furniture market. Hickory Continue reading...

Tony Duquette Collection Debuts At Baker

duquette

Looking back on the High Point Furniture Market that I attended earlier this week, one of my favorite stops was at Baker. That’s because I met a charming man named Hutton Wilkinson who showed me a collection that I fell for at first sight. Wilkinson spent an important part of his career working for and collaborating with the late design icon Tony Duquette, culminating in a business partnership in 1994. That relationship included purchasing part of Duquette’s business, along with the Continue reading...

So Many Things to Love in High Point!

BurtonJames

My second day in the High Point Furniture Market included a mixed schedule. It began with the Press Breakfast. The panel discussion was “The Rise of the Interior Designer.” This is a timely topic given the fact that interior designers are making their biggest impact every in home décor sales. I do believe that the potential for professional designers has never been better than it is today. I also saw companies from mid-tier to high end. Sometimes I am asked why I spend any time at all Continue reading...

Century Furniture Goes Green

If anyone was worried that the soft economy meant a full-stop mentality for the furniture market, they can put those thoughts to rest. There are as many new introductions here as there have even been, and maybe a few more. On my third day in the High Point Furniture Market I saw several that were noteworthy, but the one I want to tell you about came from Century. Century is one of my favorite stops every market. This company always has well-design, well-colored and well thought-out products Continue reading...

New Color from Raymond Waites and Toyo Trading

Raymond Waites

I am a true Raymond Waites fan. I think he is one of the most versatile designers in the home furnishings industry. With a talent for color and design that has been proven over time (I have followed his career for years), Raymond’s is one voice I always listen to. Today I not only saw his upholstered and case pieces at LaneVenture, I also had a chance to look at decorative accessories he designed at Toyo Trading. That’s where I ran into Raymond himself. He, Toyo president Randy Continue reading...

Ankasa’s Fabulous Textiles

ankasa

This was my first day shopping the High Point Furniture Market. I spent the early part of today in the newly remodeled Interhall area. I loved it! There were so many young companies with amazing products that it made these six aisles a joy to walk. One of the brightest spots was Ankasa. This company is only two years old, but their cutting-edge design sensibility makes me believe that an established future is assured for their hand-embellished textiles. Jodi Sandman, Vice President, Continue reading...

A Change in Schedule

chghometrends

Every now and then mistakes happen. Big ones. I discovered one of these big mistakes today when a subscriber phoned to ask about my talk in High Point during the upcoming Furniture Market. While Cathy scoured the official web site looking for the location of my talk, I went back to the email trail where I was asked to speak, hoping to confirm the location. When I did not see the location in any of these emails, I called the person who did the asking four months ago. That's when I Continue reading...

Foxy by Eric Brand

foxy

I always see lots of interesting items at the High Point furniture market, but few of them fall under the category of fun. Product at Eric Brand has been the exception. This is the company that showed an all-leather dog house a couple of years ago. Eric was kind enough to send me a disc with a picture of that piece on it, and I included it in every presentation I gave for six months. Even though this piece was made to be auctioned for charity and not really to be used, it really made a Continue reading...

In High Point, The Best is Not Always The Newest

best-newest

When I shop a market or trade fair, I typically take time only for what is new, not something that has been around for a year or so. But when I saw a collection of lamps at Julian Chichester while at the High Point furniture market, I had to make an exception. This company offered fabulous table lamps made from solid wood rollers which once printed wallpaper. A New York factory was the source of rollers that were used from 1910 to the 1930¹s and have been gathering dust since the Continue reading...
