Internet Buying is Accelerating – Are You Ready?

world-dollar

This past holiday season saw ecommerce spending at record levels. comScore reports that retail e-commerce spending in the U.S., for the first 56 days of the November to December 2010 holiday season, reached a record $30.81 billion! This is a 13 percent increase year-over-year. But the trend that grabbed our eye in this new year was a report by financial powerhouse, J.P. Morgan, entitled, "Nothing But Net - 2011 Internet Investment Guide". The big news from this report? That global ecommerce Continue reading...

Trends at the West End

The-Shops-at-West-End-Logo

Our journey this week took us to The Shops at West End in St. Louis Park, MN. Two of our favorite stores are located here – Anthropologie and Love Culture – and we thought it would be a great idea to compare how today’s trends are impacting assortments in both venues. Love Culture is a fast-fashion store that was founded in L.A. and has quickly expanded across the U.S. They pride themselves on offering women fashions that are always a step ahead in style at very affordable prices. On Continue reading...

A Grand Day on Grand Avenue

grandlogo

To celebrate the sunny day, we took a stroll up and down Grand Avenue in St. Paul, MN. Grand Avenue has long been a treasure to Twin Cities residents and travelers—a place to enjoy local shopping and dining. While there are several big name retailers in the area, this street is known for its innovative small boutiques. Our first stop was at Quince. This funky shop features one-of-a-kind clothing, accessories, jewelry and small gifts. The big surprise was that you can also find lots of Continue reading...

The Colors of Summer at Bachman’s

bachmans

Inspired by today’s sunny weather, fellow trend intern Allison and I took a trip to Bachman’s flagship garden-center store to check out this year’s outdoor trends. Minnesota has such a short window of opportunity for spending time outdoors! Bachman’s, an upscale gardening and floral-gift retailer with several locations, was ready to help consumers make the most of it with a great assortment of products for entertaining in style. We loved their bright, summery palette that included Continue reading...

Trend Scouting at the Mall of America

MOA

We bravely took on the challenge of navigating the Mall of America to check out the current trends in teen and young adult fashions. Florals and polka dots and stripes- oh my! Teeny, detailed floral prints adorn everything from sundresses and skirts to shirts and shorts. These prints are the perfect way to add fun, feminine touches to any outfit! Polka dots give a retro feel to modern styles in Black, Red and Navy. They also go well with this summer’s nautical trend, which is perfect to Continue reading...

Neutrals Expedition #1

neutrals-trendspotting

We are the summer-intern newbies at The Trend Curve™, Amber and Allison, and we are excited to be focusing on neutrals and the role they will to play in the future! To get a better feel for what is already out there, we ventured out for our first expedition to the Galleria and the Southdale Mall in Edina, MN (near The Trend Curve’s Eden Prairie offices) to look at what home furnishing and fashion retailers are putting on the floor. Our trend-spotting itinerary included Restoration Continue reading...

London Deeps

postphotos

Something fascinating is happening with deep, rich color in London. It is visible in the early emerging stages in both apparel and home décor shops. This feels like more than the typical run-up to fall—and it’s way too early for that, anyway. The Trend Curve has already forecasted a boost for deep hues that refuse to be dull. After trend spotting in London for four days, I feel even more strongly about that forecast than I did when I first made it in the spring of 2009. The Continue reading...

Staycation Fun

staycation

Conrans in London has played up the staycation theme in an attention-getting display at the entrance to their Fulham Road store called Holiday at Home. Cotton patchworks have been made into canopies over picnic tables or worked into tents that go from tee-pee tribal to backyard-overnight types to show how staying home can be big fun, rather than a big drag. Of course, the display also showcases their outdoor furniture, lanterns, candles, tableware and textiles. What a clever and uplifting Continue reading...

Going Tribal in London

combinedlondon

Some days every picture I take is a winner, while other days they are all bad, bad, bad. Today was a mix—probably because I was trying very hard not to be invited to leave all the retail stores I visited while trend-spotting on Regent Street in London, and adjacent streets that looked interesting. Only one store employee saw me snapping away today. That's not bad considering how many stores and shops I went in and out of today! There are a few important trend messages at retail here. Continue reading...

Emerging Neon Colors in London

Men’s belts at Topshop; picture frames at Selfriges; women’s clothing at Mango

I probably should have slept when I got to London today, but I was so excited to see something of the retail landscape that I unpacked my suitcase and walked to Oxford Street, one of my favorite stretches in London. Retail has seen increases in the UK while in the US, sales are down. One of the categories experiencing growth here is apparel. Even with only three hours of sleep on my overnight flight, I it was easy for me to see why. Color is a huge driver. An important story revolves Continue reading...
