Some Halloween icons never seem to die. Take skeletons, for instance; whether they’re on the move or just hanging around, their versatility knows no bounds! Autumn 2017 will, of course, be no exception to this.

As fall décor drifts more heavily to the out-of-doors variety, Graveyard Shift—one of 11 trends from our Haute Halloween and Fall™ 2017 color-and-trend forecast—will be perfect for your customers’ front yards. And there’s a good reason why: This trend eliminates the need for Halloween revelers to travel all the way to a cemetery for their late-fall thrills and chills!
Set the scene with long rectangles of freshly dug soil and tombstones bearing scary or funny messages about the evening’s skeleton crew of workers. Grave markers read, “Worked so hard, he died standing up!”, “Factory Reject”, and “Owed his soul to the company store.”
Now that you have the bare bones of it, it’s time to add just the right threadbare wardrobe touches. Be sure to use loose weaves, such as coarse linen, burlap, and torn twill. Cause of death should also be visually apparent, with a noose about one bony neck, a knife wedged in a rib cage and a skeleton that’s carrying his own skull. Our Bad Medicine trend will give you loads of ideas for medical-malpractice types of deaths, ranging from hemorrhaging due to botched suturing to IV bags filled with poison.
Remember that there is absolutely no need to limit your skeletons to the human variety. Dearly departed domesticated animals are always welcome to join the scene with their dead masters.
For an even bigger cast and crew of yard skeletons, there’s our Argh, Matey! trend. Complete with skull-and-crossbones flags and peg-legged cadavers, it’s inspirational enough to turn any front lawn into a ghostly galleon!
