There is no more reliable subject for trend during the summer months than the sea. Having risen some 8 inches since 1900, the world’s oceans are now rapidly advancing, but so is their popularity! About 52% of the US population currently lives in coastal areas, according to NOAA (National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration), and the populations of coastal communities have risen by 45% in the US since 1970. Clearly, we are drawn to the water.

Beautiful scenery, more moderate temperatures and increased employment opportunities are all solid reasons for the growing magnetism of seaside settings. Beyond these logical explanations, however, is a gut-level, primordial attraction to the ocean. Anthropologist Meredith F. Small, in an article for livescience, cites research suggesting that the ready source of protein and other nutrients in seafood contributed to the evolution of the human brain and, to this day, helps fight chemical depression.
All of this being said, even those who don’t live on the coasts are drawn to décor inspired by the ocean. In the summer of 2017, we foresee an upscale approach to the seaside trend. It features gilded starfish, crabs, and lobsters. Shagreen will cover boxes, trays and cocktail shakers, while sequins will detail table linens and decorative cushions to mimic fish scales.
Although this trend’s palette stresses elegant combinations of treasure-chest golds and blacks, some sea blues will be used as well. Warm metallics will be joined by a lavender shade of abalone and, of course, directional iridescence. Such luster will always bring to mind the ineffable allure of the sunlight’s gentle shimmer on the surface of the sea.
