Thinking About Color Trends

Many Members of our subscriber family know that I spend the summer months preparing the next version of The Trend Curve Colors™. I consider where we are today and think about how color is likely to evolve in the future. I study world events that may have an impact on color’s direction, and revisit the color wheel to see which areas are ripe for a return.

I love this part of my work—not just the careful work of choosing what I believe will be the right colors in the future, but also creating a balance of color families that is appropriate to tomorrow’s style trends.

Now that the final 38 participants in The Trend Curve Colors™ 2016 have been selected, the next step is giving names to the six palettes within the full collection, with each one providing a clue to future-trend influences (watch for K-Pop Brights and Dystopian Deeps). Naming each of the colors can be a challenge, but it’s also fun.

Is it worth it? I say yes because of my conviction that it’s the nuance that makes color new, my belief that it’s a bad idea to create new collections with old colors, and my knowledge that fresh colors—the right fresh colors—give our Members an edge at retail.

Supporting your successful assortments is the goal in every issue of The Trend Curve and in every product we create.
