It rarely every happens that trends start in the kids’ realm and advance to the adult market. Usually, trends for kids start with mom and dad, or at least with older brothers and sisters, and then they trickle down to the youngest ones. This is as true for color preferences as it is for style and surface design. But moving from kids to adults is just what happened to one trend during the past year.
In the autumn of 2015 a circus theme appeared for kids. It was seen in both Europe and in the U.S., and it arrived via bedding, toy boxes, feeding products, framed art and play tents featuring animals, performers and posters found under the big top. It showed so much potential that The Trend Curve Colors™ KIDS 2017 included it among the 10 trends in this color-and-trend forecast package.
Fast forward twelve months, and designs alluding to the circus are emerging for everyday décor, as well as in advertising for decorative products.

The Trend Curve believes in whimsy as a broader trend that is picking up steam for 2017 – 2019. Why? Because even though consumers’ lives are getting better on the economic front, they are working harder than ever, finding conflict in more places and feeling overwhelmed by the very technology that also improves their lives. The 2016 election has only added to the feeling of anxiety. Consumers need a boost, and the lighthearted nature of the circus is a perfect antidote.
