If ever there was a larger-than-life memory box, it’s Havana Cuba these days! Its influence is so strong, in fact, that we included an Old Havana trend in The Trend Curve Colors™ 2017 color-and-trend forecast. But you don’t need anything as large as Havana-style furniture to make a fun Cuba-Libre statement with 2017 spring and summer party décor. Just a few trend-right icons from 1940s-50s Havana will do the trick.
This décor is a quaint mix of the traditional Cuban and mid-century American tourism that invariably speaks of Havana’s booming nightlife at that time. It’s a milieu almost perfectly captured in the well-known sitcom I Love Lucy, in which real-life Cuban-born bandleader Desi Arnaz is wed to the flashy American showgirl, Lucille Ball.
Traditional items like Cuban-conga drums and maracas are painted with the star and stripes of the Cuban flag. Fruity cocktails wait under the shade of palm and banana trees. Partagas cigars, Havana hats and images of dice and roulette wheels are great for guys. Strings of pearls, red lipstick prints and flamingoes appeal to a feminine sensibility. A palette heavily weighted toward lush greens and floral-inspired brights is punctuated with graphic, black-and-white geometrics and gold-metallic glazes that bring the look into the 21st century.
