Adding More Black to Black Friday 2017

March 7, 2016 By Janice Carlson -

christmasworld_2015(1)If there was one color story to take away from the Christmasworld 2016 show in Germany, it was black. In fact, The Trend Curve’s trend-spotting team believes that black can singlehandedly bring any Holiday theme into the realm of trend and you’ll ignore it at your own peril come Black Friday 2017!

Black appeared in virtually every material, including wax, metal, paper and wood at Christmasworld 2016. It upstaged traditional Christmas red in red-and-green stories and made green the accent. Black teamed with white in graphic patterns that brought a contemporary mood to the Season. Black even stood in for chocolate in Holiday treats! Like a rising new star in Hollywood, it was paired with more established Holiday hues, like gold, white and brown for maximum impact.

At a show where more was more—more colors, more textures, more materials and more layers—black was both a perfect addition and an essential component in a countertrend toward simplicity. When paired with gold, it showed it could create a luxurious vibe. But it was equally at home with basic craft-paper browns and natural wood. And, while an important shift to neutrals for Christmas will be accomplished with browns going forward, our top choice in the growing Holiday neutrals story is definitely black for 2017.

Even though black pushed green out of the spotlight in traditional combinations, that only freed up the green color family to explore new directions.
