Going West at Showtime

December 13, 2017 By Michelle Lamb -

From the Justina Blakeney collection at Valdese Weavers

While most collections were exploring a Boho revival for décor (driven in great part by the success of Justina Blakeney‘s book, The New Bohemians), an American West theme was quietly emerging at the Showtime textiles market. Showtime was not the first time a Western trend got noticed. Hints of this look were also visible at the High Point furniture market in October.

At Showtime, the look focused on a few key elements. Textured stripes led the way. Sometimes they evoked the irregular strié patterns seen on canyon walls, while in other situations the inspiration came from the designs found on Navajo blankets. Tribal geometrics, like diamonds, arrow heads and other symbols also played a role. Various cacti took part in the trend, too, forming part of the bridge that connects Bohemian motifs with those of True West.

Larger scale, motifs filled with tiny icons and modern colors (think peacock or purple) helped differentiate these designs from Southwest looks of the past. But abstract influences, lots of texture (including directional hand-stitched looks and pops of bouclé) and unexpected layouts like motifs layered over stripes) were equally important.

Look below a few examples of Western influences from Showtime.
