Gold Makes Gains on the Table

Vendors at the NY Tabletop market show products for dining, drinking, serving and gifting. Buyers come to market seeking out new collections, casual or dressed up, to promote and style displays around. As always, the October market delivered.

The pace at which gold was adding share confirmed that this metallic has plenty of room to grow. Although platinum is currently unchallenged as the tableware category’s bestselling basic, Lenox says that when it comes to trend, gold is their focus. At WWRD (parent company of Waterford, Wedgwood, Royal Doulton and Royal Albert) gold is already doing well on the trend side, especially when it has a matte finish or leans toward rose gold.

Yet, gold was not the only competition platinum faced in New York. Matte-finished copper looked amazing in accessory pieces from Donna Karan for Lenox. At Sambonet, Gio Ponti Copper Vintage was among the flatware patterns being previewed. A solid-copper brandy snifter, mint-julep cup and cocktail shaker joined Mikasa‘s Moscow Mule cup (still on-trend) and other copper items.

Bormioli Rocco believes that copper is “hot now,” and The Trend Curve agrees. This company’s Fido Metallics glass food-storage jars included metallics for the past, present and future, with silver, copper and gold lids. At Kosta Boda, new skull-shaped votive holders in the Still Life collection by Ludvig Lofgren also came in silver, copper and gold.

With so much more competition than it has had in years, platinum will begin to give up share. It will take another year or so before gold shifts from fashion-forward favorite to a contender for everyday bestseller, but it will happen. Watch for the shift to happen gradually over the next 18 months. During that time, gold will show up with increasing frequency, in a range of price points, and will even be associated with basic tabletop products.
