It all started with the wildly successful television series Mad Men. It got everyone talking about the lifestyle of the 1960s-70s, the drinking culture of corporate executives and how consumers entertained at home. More importantly, it energized an interest in mid-century modern style that had already begun.
Today, mid-century forms and surface designs have become such an important part of the home-furnishings scene that they are no longer considered a trend. Instead, they have transitioned into classic territory. And while the look is a particular favorite of Millennials, it is also nostalgic for Baby Boomers and compelling for Generation-X. No wonder it has shown such staying power!
Yet one element of mid-century décor is still relatively new: martini tables. A hallmark of the era, tall-and-thin drinks tables got a slower start. High-end furniture maker Pearson debuted a fabulous table early on at the High Point furniture market. This single item was a catalyst for The Trend Curve’s first trend alert for this category (see the June, 2011 issue of The Trend Curve). However, it is only recently that others started tapping into the function and flexibility that these clever little pieces provide, as well as their ability to tell directional texture and mixed-media stories.
Whether drinks tables use upscale materials like Macassar ebony, petrified wood slabs or gilded metals, or they take a more-authentic point of view, with walnut, brass or glass, they are showing up in a range of styles that goes far beyond their mid-century roots. Some are traditional, while others have an eco connection. European styling is a factor, and so is glamour.
Drinks tables are destined for key item status by the time 2017 is over. Expect to see them in new assortments for many years to come.
