The multinational electronics and engineering company, Philips, has partnered with flooring company Desso to develop “light transmissive carpets.“
From the press release:
“This light transmissive carpet solution is designed to engage directly with people’s senses and the eyes’ natural inclination to seek out light. The technology takes advantage of people’s tendency to be guided by the floor when moving through and interacting with space. It brings information, direction, inspiration and safety via the carpet you walk on.”
At The Trend Curve we keep a close eye on trends in materials and technology in order to anticipate what is likely to come. Though it is challenging to think about how this might be used in the home, we’re confident carpet and rug designers will have “Aha!” moments on how developments like this might be utilized.
One designer we talked with said that it wasn’t just about commercial buildings. Leveraging this technology could be interesting in the home to create perimeter, ambient lighting next to baseboards. Thinking out loud he said, “Pastel colors could glow or cycle at Easter. Orange light could glow at Halloween. Brown or tan at Thanksgiving. Red, green or other holiday colors in December.”
