With the New Year young and filled with hope, The Trend Curve team thought it would be interesting to look at Americans’ top New Year’s resolutions for 2016 and consider how they might drive home-products purchases.
Topping the list is loosing weight. This resolution, if kept, will not only drive new clothing purchases. It will also trigger an opportunity for assortments that help consumers maximize space in closets and drawers, since both “before” and “after” clothing will need a home. Mounting colored wall hooks or using different colors of garment hangers to show consumers at a glance if these are “large” pants or the new smaller ones will need clever marketing, but the idea has potential. Using a color-coded system for sizes may come in handy for diet relapses. These are as statistically predictable as the diet resolutions themselves.

Getting organized came in second on the resolutions list, but storage may not look the way it has in the past. With more and more consumers in smaller homes and apartments, storage is moving out of cramped closets and into living spaces. That means they must be as decorative as they are functional. Shaped cubbies and leaning closets have already taken up the challenge, but there is so much more that could be done. This shift screams opportunity.

With “enjoying life to the fullest” also making the top five resolutions, products emphasizing a European sense of joie de vivre (such as those that will be featured at this year’s Ambiente “Dining, Living and Giving” themed trade fair) definitely should be included in product assortments. Don’t forget items with a touch of whimsy—like mirrors shaped like balloons or ice cream treats, an outer-space-themed vase or cushions with dogs on them.

Lastly, but certainly not the least of these resolutions is the desire to “spend more time with family.” Products that make dining at home and home-entertainment more enjoyable will be on everyone’s must-have list in 2016. Best bets: glasses for craft beers and small plates for the snacks that are increasingly substitutes for full meals.
